Dunton Bassett Primary School

P.E.

We use Val Sabin’s scheme of work to deliver the majority of our P.E. curriculum. Specialist assistants and coaches are used to deliver sessions and, at the same time, train teaching staff in delivering high quality P.E. lessons.

Our swimming curriculum is delivered using our own trained specialist teacher at the local swimming pool. We start our swimming curriculum in Key Stage One, so that all children learn to swim as soon as possible.

We take the children on trips out of school to cover the Outdoor and Adventurous aspect of the curriculum, including a residential visit in Years 5&6 to an outdoor activity centre. We also use our extensive school grounds.

We complement our P.E. lessons with other physical activity and well-being opportunities. We are a partner school with the Learning South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership (LSLSSP), who organise a range of activities and provide coaching. We also use other, external quality physical activity providers who run sessions both in school time and as after school clubs. These include:

  • Football

  • Basketball

  • Dodgeball

  • Dance

  • Gymnastics

  • Multi-Skills

  • Yoga

We have ‘Sporting Ambassadors’ in school, children who organise and lead lunchtime activities. We also have ‘Well-Being Ambassadors’, children who are trained to help out their peers through physical activity. The ‘Big Moves’ sessions in school teach children about making healthy lifestyle choices.

We compete well in inter-schools competitions and often punch well above our weight!
